Paul Smith Mainline takes its inspiration from classic evening wear .Elements of traditional evening attire are abstracted and presented in an unusual way through the technique of customisation. Evening wear details including satin lapels and binding are seen on alternative styles of jackets, waistcoats, trousers and coats. The dichotomy of formal wear with casual wear is seen through fabric choices and styling; a tux jacket is worn with relaxed trousers and under an oversized military coat, a traditional tux jacket is reworked in washed fabric and features zip fastenings.
A slim silhouette dominates tailoring with narrow shoulders, slim sleeves and waist. Classic, heavy winter fabrics include; Barrathea wool and elegant evening fabrics; silk, velvet, duchess satin and moiré. All these formal, dark fabrics are washed for a more dishevelled look.
Bespoke details, taken from evening jackets, grace 1 and 2 button suits; classic hound’s-tooth and Prince of Wales suits features spear lapels, satin bindings, and waistcoats include shawl collars. Slim, parallel leg trousers feature velvet tapes down the side and raw edge piping details adorn formal trousers.
Shirting styles are simple with clean slim shapes. Shirts come in sophisticated, muted colours; khakis, greys, aubergines, and are washed to give a well-worn look. Classic fabrics feature simple detailing; small collars and uneven buttons, for a weathered look. Prints are dominated by small repeats; floral and dots with larger, subtle upholstery inspired designs giving an antique look. A variation on the classic evening shirt is seen with washed, slightly dishevelled bib fronted and collarless shirts.
T-shirts and jerseys provide great layering items, to be worn under evening shirts. Casual wool jerseys come in as assortment of rich colours and feature formal evening inspired bib fronts
Muted colours dominate knitwear with an abundance of marls in varying shades of green, and burgundy. Designs are simple with elements of customisation; reinforced tape details, bindings, zips, thumb holes on sleeves. Knitwear provides a casual element to the evening wear look, a group of traditional cable and simple alpaca knits are to be worn under an evening suit.
