The Signature Stripe Lights Up Covent Garden

We announce a new lighting installation which brings the Signature Stripe to Covent Garden’s historic Market Building.

Paul Smith and Covent Garden share a lot of history. Our very first London shop opened its doors in this iconic part of town back in 1979, and in fact it’s still there today, some 45 years later. Take a stroll down Floral Street and what you’ll see is our original London outpost, which began in a disused bakery at number 44, before expanding into its neighbouring buildings at 41, 42, and 43.

By this point, we like to think we’re very much part of the fabric of Covent Garden: just one of many, many elements that make it a truly unique corner of one of the greatest cities in the world. So, when an opportunity to celebrate this shared history arose, of course we jumped at the chance.

A new lighting installation is now in place in Covent Garden’s historic Market Building. Running from Friday 16th February to Sunday 3rd March, the installation consists of more than 1,000 lights across the building’s 36 arches, with hourly displays every day between 4pm and 10pm. In honour of Paul Smith’s decades-long connection to the area, the lights will magically depict our Signature Stripe, using colourful LEDs to conjure up the instantly recognisable design.

“In many ways, Covent Garden is my London home,” Paul explains. “My shop on Floral Street was my first in London, and my studio is only a stone’s throw away. This part of London is very special to me, and I’m delighted that we can celebrate our world-famous Signature Stripe in the heart of Covent Garden.”

Be sure to get down to Covent Garden if you can, and join us in celebrating an iconic piece of design.
