Paul Smith Junior Autumn/Winter 14

The autumn/winter 14 Paul Smith Junior collections combine traditional craftsmanship and playful modern design, inspired by London's rich cultural backdrop.

Junior Boy

The Junior Boy 'Savile Row Rocks' collection was inspired by the world-famous London home of tailoring, whose renowned customers have ranged from Winston Churchill to Mick Jagger. The street's rock 'n' roll credentials – including being the location for The Beatles' final live performance in 1969 – informed an idiosyncratic take on traditional tailoring.

Designed with a dapper, fun-loving boy in mind, the collection contrasts smart styles – such as the classic black Gatsby suit jacket – with humorous touches like the colourful bikeprint Goeff shirt. Bold highlights accentuate a muted colour palette: brick-red chinos and jewel-hued linings add a fun twist.

Inspired by historical explorers, the Junior Boy 'Gentleman Climber' collection evokes a spirit of adventure. Practical but fun, the designs are perfect for the curious, outwardbound loving boy: the khaki Gaetan faux furtrimmed jacket and navy trapper hat will keep out the cold during even the most daring of adventures. Quirky postcard prints and a natural colour palette call to the wild.

Junior Girl

Covent Garden, in Central London, inspired the vibrant Junior Girl 'Floral Street' collection. Sophisticated dark blue tones are punctuated with dusky pink, jade and cream. Playful patterns include photographic florals, feathers and stylised animal prints on T-shirts and dresses, and the navy and pink bike-print Gilina Fair Isle cardigan.

The Junior Girl 'In Piccadilly' collection encapsulates the bright lights and excitement of London at Christmas time. Traditional tweeds are contrasted with bright, geometric patterns. Festive red and gold punctuate a neutral palette of camel, grey and cream.

Exotic birds inspired the Junior Girl 'Like a Bird' collection, filled with romantic florals and photographic feather prints in a vibrant array of hues, from raspberry pink to violet, contrasted with grey.

The Paul Smith PSJR Boy autumn/winter 14 'Indigo Addict' collection was inspired by the intrepid explorer, searching for indigo in the desert. A deep, earthy colour palette and quirky use of prints offer a playful, modern take on influences from the natural world.

Shades of blue – from navy to indigo to teal – feature prominently in the collection, along with complementary soft grey and crisp white. The cool palette clashes with contrasting warmer hues, such as rust orange and mustard yellow.

Traditional patterns such as checks and stripes appear on shirts and T-shirts but given a modern treatment – for example, the oversized-check Gambo shirt. Adventurous prints inspired by the theme of exploration make an impact, such as bold mountainscapes and graphic depictions of natural scenes.

Semi-precious stones and other discoveries are rendered graphically in repeating patterns – like the Goliath slim-fit shirt in navy – giving the collection a contemporary, geometric feel.

The colours and textures of the natural landscape are evoked in multi-tonal knitwear in shades of blue, grey, cream and earthy orange and brown, such as the Gilot jumper. Jumpers, chunky-knitt cardigans and zip-up slogan hoodies can be layered over slim-fit shirts or patterned T-shirts in complementary hues for warmth.

The collection's fitted Gaucho chinos are available in dark blue, slate and burnt orange, co-ordinating with the rest of the pieces. The navy Gonzague chinos offer a more relaxed fit – a classic style that goes with everything. The mix-and-match feel of the designs creates a flexible collection with pieces that can be worn in many varied combinations.

Slogan T-shirts and hoodies transform the Paul Smith logo with quirky fonts and patterns, and features such as zip pockets on jumpers, stripy labels and patch pockets add practical but fun details.
