Wednesday 13 June 2007
This June, Paul Smith is delighted to be hosting an exhibition of the work of Hollywood actor Steven Berkoff.
Best known for his productions of ‘Hamlet’ and ‘Macbeth’ and for villainous roles in films such as 'Octopussy' and 'War & Remembrance', Berkoff adds another string to his bow with a show of photographic prints at Paul Smith.
Titled ‘Berkoff’s East End’ the show comprises a series of never before seen photographs that document London’s East End in 60s & 70s.
Born and brought up in London, Berkoff took photographs in and around Brick Lane. His subject matter was simple - real people, local characters leading London lives. Pictures depict the butcher’s wife, the flower seller and their beautiful, often tattered shops and slightly shabby streets capturing the quirks and transitional moments of London and Londoners.
