Paul Smith is delighted to announce the exhibition of “The Royal Ballet Portraits” at Paul Smith SPACE GALLERY.
'Several months ago I was asked if I could meet a young man called Steven McRae who was a big fan of Paul Smith, which I did and he came to my studio in London. After meeting him I realised that he was a Principal Dancer of the Royal Ballet and that his history was very interesting, he was from Australia and his father had an extraordinary career as a drag car racer and he was one of the youngest Principals ever.
Through conversation with him and the Royal Ballet team I realised they were going to visit Japan later in the year and offered for them to maybe enjoy a party together in my Gallery at the Space shop in Tokyo.
To make it more special it was suggested that I photographed the principal dancers and that these photos were used as an exhibition to coincide with their visit. I have since photographed them and tried not to show them always dancing but more portraiture, basically trying to feel their character. I am pleased to say that the dancers are happy with the result and have in fact selected their own photographs from the ones that I took.' - Paul Smith
The exhibition will run from 18th June to 6th July 2010. All prints are for sale in 2 sizes.
