Working together from their respective disciplines, Zanon-Larcher and director Jules Wright stage nothing formally, but work closely with their performers to improvise a sequence of scenes, which unfold into a loosely shaped story. They work in a way which falls somewhere between film and photography, producing a body of work which eschews conventional fashion editorials and instead tests the dramatic limits of stills’ photography. Both are fascinated by the drama of a work and finding the right gestus to express emotional and psychological truth.
The images were first shown at The Wapping Project, London – 12 February to 11 April 2010 where it was staged as an installation, set in a white chalk landscape with over 80 images rolling across a film screen masked by red velvet curtains and a row of abandoned cinema seats.
The exhibition is now moving to the Paul Smith ‘Space’ Gallery in Tokyo, opening on the 17th July to the 24th August. The ‘Space’ Gallery will show 40 of the 80 images along with the film. Paul Smith is pleased to be showing this exhibition after supplying many of the clothes for the project and also to be the first gallery in Japan to show the work of Thomas Larcher. A book accompanies the exhibition.
'A French Picture Show': 17th July -24th August 2010.
