James Straffon

To celebrate the 97th Tour de France in July, Paul Smith Globe is delighted to host the debut exhibition of James Straffon’s cycling-themed paintings and collages.

After graduating from Middlesex University with a degree in Graphic Design, James Straffon has worked with everyone from Tate Modern to EMI on a range of projects across the creative industries.

James founded NÖ Endeavour in 2006, an online journal that combines diary, photography, film and prose to express his love for cycling, and its heritage. Subsequently, he has launched NÖ Gallery which features cycling-themed paintings and mixed media work, including the series of paintings Head Badges which he has been working on since 2009.

As celebrations of the bicycle, “with its beauty of speed, its dancing flames, its dynamism, and its simple honest appeal” (Straffon), James’ work is driven by the contours of European racing circuits, the graphic artistry of the bicycle frame itself and the rich tradition of the sport. Rare racing paraphernalia, road maps and the iconography of celebrated cycling manufacturers often form the layers of these bold and colourful works.
