An exhibition of work by contemporary, gritty and ‘un-precious’ photographer, Valerie Phillips will be held at our ‘Globe’ shop in Heathrow Terminal 5, during August.

Valerie grew up in pre-disneyfied New York City, cut school to compete with her skateboard team, snuck into clubs to see bands, and eventually left for London to take pictures.

To date she has published 6 books, each documenting a different girl. From a Polish high school student in Brooklyn to a young teen gymnast training in Oklahoma. Her books convey an un-precious, realistic and spirited account of someone’s life.

Following the success and commercial acknowledgement of her work, various exhibitions of her photography have been held in locations all over the world: including New York, Barcelona, Tokyo and London.

Focusing on Philips’ love of flying, this exhibition is particularly topical for our T5 art wall: “Since I can remember, I’ve been fascinated with humans flying - airplanes and rockets, and the beauty, danger and mystery that surrounds it. For years I’ve taken pictures of planes, airfields, airports - the landscape of flight, along with images of girls connecting with these things. The kind of girls who are happy to be themselves and unravel their individual quirks and curiosities in front of the camera. Girls with the same intangible beauty and adventurous spirit I associate with flying.” Phillips
