Born in 1936, Keiichi Tanaami’s creative work in painting, illustration and graphic design first came to the fore in the 1960s when his vibrant, colourful and psychedelic designs adorned publications as esteemed as ‘Studio Voice’ and ‘Oz'

Tanaami’s distinct style – including trademark goldfish, pine trees and waves – is highly respected by young contemporary artists in Japan. His latest work entitled ‘Kamon’, is a set of work that revives the tradition of “Kamon” a traditional cultural icon that is unique to Japan.

Found on warrior’s armour, kimonos or even tombstones, these tiny markings have been used by many as a form of family motif. Suns and moons, mountains and rivers, animals and plants, clouds, waves, lightning, tools, buildings, and amulets are combined and remixed to create brand new icons.

It was TANAAMI who first had an eye for reinvigorating the tradition. His graphic sensibility synchronized perfectly with the rather ‘pop’ nature that KAMON represents. What he has created is remarkable. Keeping to the original shapes, he has injected something to make them twist, dance and burst into life, making them a group of colourful characters, converted by the spirit of Japanese art.

An exhibition of Kamon by TANAAMI was held at Paul Smith 9 Albemarle Street in London from 13th - 24th December 2006.
