Lilian Bassman at Paul Smith Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles

Paul Smith is pleased to present an exhibition of limited edition black and white prints by iconic photographer Lilian Bassman at the Melrose Avenue shop, LA.

Lillian Bassman has been noted for the images she took between 1940 and the 1960's whilst she was working for Junior Bazaar, and later Harpers Bazaar. Her photography demonstrated women in their purist form; untainted and exhibiting the style and class of New York's 'Mad Men' era.
'The clothes have a structured beauty; the gloves are mandatory; the necks are long. Elegant men with cigarettes between their fingers occasionally enter the frame, encountering women who appear utterly indifferent to their attention.' New York Times, 2009
In the 1970's Ms Bassman became disillusioned by the pollution of fashion photography with 1960's and destroyed many of her negatives.
This exhibition celebrates the life and work of one of the most important female fashion photographers of the 20th century.
