Blitz at Paul Smith No. 9 Albemarle Street, London

The rebellious spirit of the 80s comes alive at Paul Smith No. 9 Albemarle Street with an exhibition looking at the work of Blitz – one of the magazines at the vanguard of counter-culture.

Known for its radical and incendiary take on music, art, film and fashion, Blitz – along with The Face and i-D – was part of a vibrant new generation of publications that celebrated the eccentric, championed diversity and questioned traditional standards of beauty. Iain R Webb, who was its fashion editor from 1982 to 1987, was among the young talents who started the creative revolution that changed the way we perceive fashion and media today.
From 22 November to 13 December 2013, Paul Smith's No.9 Albemarle Street shop will be transformed with prints of fashion photography styled by Webb that appeared in the pages of Blitz.
The exhibition, entitled 'You're Ugly and Your Mother Dresses You Funny', will star five denim jackets from Paul Smith that have been specially customised by Webb in his typically idiosyncratic style. The concept references the Blitz Designer Denim Jacket project of 1986, for which he commissioned 22 designers, including Paul Smith, to reimagine a Levi's denim jacket. Webb's creations are emblazoned with provocative words such as 'outsider', 'vagabond' and 'misfit', plucked from interviews, while the sleeves are adorned with stars cut from vintage fabrics taken from his own personal collection.
"I remember with great fondness collaborating with Iain to customise a Levi's jacket," says Paul. "Projects like this are quite commonplace now, but in 1986, it was quite a unique thing to do. In a way, this sums up Blitz – very adventurous, edgy and always pushing new boundaries."
In addition there are three new pieces specially designed for the occasion. A headscarf features a collage portrait of Blitz cover girl and 80s style icon Scarlett Cannon, while a cotton canvas tote takes inspiration from model Amanda Cazalet, who hit headlines after kissing Madonna in her 'Justify My Love' video. A knitted 'Ban The Bomb' balaclava has also been created, inspired by a fashion story styled by Webb for Blitz entitled 'No Nukes Is Good News'.
