For Autumn/winter 14 the Paul Smith Red Ear Collection draws inspiration from Russian chemist and photographer Sergey Mikhaylovic Prokudin-Gorsky, and Max Alpert’s images of the Norwegian communist lumberjacks, pictured in 'USSR im Bau no 6' - a monthly illustrated propaganda magazine.
The clash of vibrant colour in Prokudin-Gorsky’s photography, with the dark and melancholic feeling of Alpert’s propaganda imagery, provides inspiration for a rich colour palette of deep reds and blues set against subdued tones of charcoal grey and black.
Intricate handmade embroideries and motifs draw inspiration from images of Tsar’s Russia, whilst the protective garments worn by the workers in Alpert’s photographs inspire a clean and classic workwear aesthetic visible in shirting and warm knitwear, alongside heavy wool blanket bomber jackets and vertical quilted parkas.
