Paul Smith Black Autumn/Winter 13

For autumn/winter 2013, Paul Smith Black Label combines bold colour, graphic prints and rich textures in a collection inspired by the work of artist, Sara VanDerBeek.

Famed for her mixed-media artworks, VanDerBeek's graphical collages have influenced autumn/winter 2013 Black Label prints, colour and seaming, resulting in a layered and eclectic look to the collection. Multiple prints and colours are combined and semi-sheer fabrics are layered to create elegant tones and shadows.

Floral prints burst into life across silk dresses, pleated skirts and shirts. The jacquard floral print that appears on a single-button jacket and matching trousers give a discreet twist to a formal tailored look and pops of colour in a collage printed dress and top are set to brighten up your autumn/winter 13 wardrobe.

Across the collection the silhouette is relaxed but clean. Shoulders are neat, while softer looks are given a graphic edge with lace or contrasting panels of texture or print. The influence of VanDerBeek's collages can be seen in the recurring theme of seaming and insert detail, which provide a characteristic Paul Smith twist in playfully putting colours, textures and prints next to each other.

Two palettes dominate the Black Label collection: the first reflects VanDerBeek's block collage method by contrasting dark navy, grey tones and violet blue with stark white and gun-metal trims and accessories. Highlights of fluorescent pink, acid coral and mint green are taken from photographic colour-burn techniques. The second is a warm, rich and wintry combination of burgundy, dusty pink and chartreuse contrasted with black and cream, and with touches of camel in coats and knitwear.

Combining rich textures is key across the Black Label collection; coupling a two-tone cashmere jumper with graphic printed trousers or a soft jersey dress with a more structured wool blend three button jacket. Coats come in warm, deep textures with asymmetric detailing and are designed to work beautifully worn over brightly coloured flannel suiting. Tailoring comes in light wool voile with a leather trim, creating a relaxed and contemporary look with a graphic edge.
