Stripe in Motion
Unveiling a new installation which sets our Signature Stripe in motion.
Our Signature Stripe has popped up in unlikely places. It’s appeared on the exterior of a custom-made hot air balloon, which we sent soaring over the English countryside, the Mojave Desert and the plains around Mount Fuji. It’s been painted onto the walls of our famous Melrose Avenue shop in LA – a clever trompe l’oeil effect was used to ‘unwrap’ the shop’s iconic pink exterior, revealing the stripey core beneath. It’s also found its way onto cars, the walls of an art gallery in Japan, and a light display in London’s Covent Garden.
Whatever form it takes, however, it remains instantly recognisable, and synonymous with Paul Smith. In its latest guise, the Signature Stripe is set in motion in a series of installations which give life and movement to our beloved design. Appearing in select shops only – Albemarle Street in London, Bicester, Heathrow T5, and Wooster Street in New York City – these installations present the Stripe with a playful sense of humour which feels quintessentially Paul Smith.
Everyday objects such as record players, cooling fans and bike wheels are reimagined in Signature Stripe livery, showing how these familiar colours are made new when movement is introduced. It’s precisely because of this familiarity – the eye-catching combination of 40 different shades – that the Stripe is so versatile, lending itself to all manner of surfaces, textures, shapes, and contexts while remaining unmistakeably Paul Smith. It’s always a rewarding experience for us to continue to find new ways of reinventing the Stripe.
